Cerium Oxide
|
Cerium is part of the rare earth metals family. It is the most abundant element of the rare earth metals. It is very reactive and when reacted with oxygen, forms cerium oxide, a stable compound. Cerium oxide is used commercially most commonly as a polishing agent for glass, mirrors, and optics. Jewelers also use the compound for polishing gemstones and by the lapidary industry for polishing stones.
Cerium Oxide is great for polishing because it has a size between .25 - .30 microns. When compared to a diamond grit polishing pad, 1 micron is equivalent to 14000 grit. Is is said that cerium oxide can be equivalent to 50,000 grit. Cerium oxide comes in powder form and must be mixed with water to form a slurry to be used. Powers will usually be sold in a white or reddish color. White color cerium oxide power is generally a more pure powder and better quality. The cerium oxide slurry should have the consistency similar to milk. Apply the slurry to your object to be polished and use a buffing pad such as felt or leather. Keep the cerium oxide damp, but not runny for best results.
